چکیده

In this paper we will show in detail that the performed attempts aimed at the detection of the general relativistic Lense-Thirring effect in the gravitational field of the Earth with the existing LAGEOS satellites are always presented in an unrealistically optimistic and misleading way which is inadequate for such an important test of fundamental physics. E.g., in the latest reported measurement of the gravitomagnetic shift with the nodes of the LAGEOS satellites and the 2nd generation GRACE-only EIGEN-GRACE02S Earth gravity model over an observational time span of 11 years a 5-10% total accuracy is claimed at 1-3σ, respectively. We will show that, instead, it might be 15-45% (1-3σ) or 26-78% (1-3σ) depending on how the impact of the secular variations of the even zonal harmonics is evaluated.

On the reliability of the so far performed tests for measuring the Lense-Thirring ef- fect with the LAGEOS satellites

In this paper we critically discuss the so far performed attempts aimed at the detection of the general relativistic gravitomagnetic LenseThirring effect in the gravitational field of the Earth with the existing LAGEOS satellites. In the latest reported measurement of the gravitomagnetic shift with the nodes of the LAGEOS satellites and the 2nd generation GRACE-only EIGEN-GRACE02S Earth gravity...

On Possible A-Priori "Imprinting" of General Relativity Itself on the Performed Lense-Thirring Tests with LAGEOS Satellites

The impact of possible a-priori “imprinting” effects of general relativity itself on recent attempts to measure the general relativistic Lense-Thirring effect with the LAGEOS satellites orbiting the Earth and the terrestrial geopotential models from the dedicated mission GRACE is investigated. It is analytically shown that general relativity, not explicitly solved for in the GRACE-based models,...

Some comments on a recent paper on the impact of the secular variations of the even zonal harmonics on the Lense-Thirring tests with the LAGEOS satellites

In this paper we critically discuss the recent paper gr-qc/0412001 by Ciufolini about the impact of the secular variations J̇l of the even zonal harmonic coefficients of the Newtonian multipolar expansion of the terrestrial gravitational field on the performed tests aimed at the detection of the post-Newtonian gravitomagnetic Lense-Thirring effect in the gravitational field of the Earth with the...

Conservative evaluation of the uncertainty in the LAGEOS-LAGEOS II Lense-Thirring test

We deal with the test of the general relativistic gravitomagnetic Lense-Thirring effect currently being conducted in the Earth’s gravitational field with the combined nodes Ω of the laser-ranged geodetic satellites LAGEOS and LAGEOS II. One of the most important sources of systematic uncertainty on the orbits of the LAGEOS satellites, with respect to the Lense-Thirring signature, is the bias du...
